Too often, Christians have ignored or demonized pop culture, such as television, movies or
popular music. It has been characterized as either ‘trivial entertainment’ or the work of the devil
and, therefore, Christians should stay well away for fear of contamination. The Harry Potter
books have thus been condemned as leading children into the occult, Hollywood has been
criticized for its lack of sexual morality and television soaps have been written off as mindless
pulp. In such a climate a similar attitude has been voiced regarding sport, science and
technology, saying that they are either threats to the gospel or providers of false salvation.
This book takes a different view. It assembles 42 observations of contemporary culture to
provide a way in to reading passages from Luke’s Gospel. It takes the questions posed by pop
culture seriously, as a way to gain insight into Christian faith. Why should such everyday things
be in a fruitful dialogue with the Bible? Christians would see this as being because the God of
his written word is also the God of creation – a creation that has Jesus as Lord and where the
Holy Spirit is continually at work. We would therefore expect that the Bible can help us to
understand certain aspects of pop culture, and pop culture can help us to understand certain
aspects of the Bible, not just in terms of illustrations, but in the posing of questions to one
another.
