Monologue/Reflection: A year to remember
It was a year to remember. The fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar. Roman rule and very unpopular. That man Pontius Pilate was in charge of us. Nobody trusted him and he probably didn’t trust himself. It’s rumoured that his wife was the one who really influenced that household. As for Herod, he couldn’t get enough of the Roman ways of life, feasting, giving parties, acquiring his own brother’s wife and constantly neglecting his duties to keep in with all the ‘right’ people. It was a bad time and it didn’t seem as if things would ever get better - until that particular year, when things really began to change.
Stories had been circulating for some time about strange things that were happening in Galilee. That wasn’t too unusual – the area was known for its rebellious characters and as being a centre of unrest. What else could you expect from the north of the country? But these stories seemed to be centred round two related families and the word was that the younger generations would have to be watched.
