Imagining the Lectionary: always pray and never give up (Proper 24C / Ordinary 29C)

As her three young ducklings paddle frenetically into the unknown adventures which lie ahead of them their mother glides along quietly behind. She is alert and watchful, letting them set the direction and, as far as she can, making sure that they come to no harm. She is concerned for and protective of her offspring. The distance she keeps is just what they need if they are to develop into adults, a clear space which expresses the wonderfully delicate balance which exists between intimacy and solitude.

As the young ones look ahead their mother has oversight in the most profound and good sense. And as the ducklings travel forwards together, in their all round field of vision each one can see clearly that she is  there. The female mallard is close by, attentive and carefully present; a reassuring prospect for the little ones.
