This is a cry from the abyss, written in the style of the individual lament found in some of the Psalms and elsewhere in the Hebrew Scriptures.
IN DESOLATION (A SONG OF LAMENT)
1
How full of anguish my lament!
The flame of faith is well nigh spent.
How dry the well! How dark the night!
For God is veiled from sense and sight.
2
The ancient certainties are gone;
bewilderment remains alone.
To no avail I search around
for firm‚ substantial‚ solid ground.
3
I can not‚ from the deep abyss‚
sing words that promise utter bliss.
When gloom and doubt begin to surge‚
my only song must be a dirge.
Verses 4-6 follow
L.M. Suggested tune: Deo Gracias
This hymn is written in the style of the individual
lament found in some of the Psalms and elsewhere
in the Hebrew Scriptures.
