Why does it seem..?

Why does it seem that because there is suffering
Someone or something must be to blame?
Why does it feel that the world needs an offering -
Someone or something to bear all our shame?
Deep in our hearts, where there’s no rhyme or reason
Something stirs to give our fears a name.

Verses 2-3 follow

Tune: (BPW134) Genesis 10 9 10 9 with refrain

Michael Docker

Why does it seem..?

Why does it seem that because there is suffering

Someone or something must be to blame?

Why does it feel that the world needs an offering -

Someone or something to bear all our shame?

Deep in our hearts, where there’s no rhyme or reason

Something stirs to give our fears a name.

Why does it feel that a price is demanded,

Why does the world turn to an iron law?

Sometimes the darkness gathers around us,

Sometimes we wonder what the world is for.

Deep is the logic driving our destruction:

Humankind has walked this way before.

What can be done – can the iron law be broken?

What can be offered in such noble cause?

Look to the place where a Word has been spoken;

Find there a life that was gladly counted loss.

Deep is the darkness, but deeper still the true light;

Great our fear, but greater still the Cross.
