Why do the most annoying pieces of music get stuck in my head throughout the day?
Why is abbreviation such a long word?
Does anybody actually enjoy watching daytime TV?
Actually there are plenty more things that are a mystery to me, and if I continued listing them I would be here all day. Perhaps the greatest mystery of all is one that is the focus in many churches this weekend: Trinity Sunday.
We may think we understand the Trinity, however most people, when they try and describe it, end up confused, in a mess or slipping into one of the many heresies that orthodox christianity rejects. To be honest this isn't anyone's fault. It is down to the fact that The Trinity is a mystery, it can be a little confusing and beyond our understanding. But that is the part of the wonderful mystery of God. God is beyond our understanding. We can have a relationship with God, but I have a feeling that is more to do with God than us. We catch glimpses of God through the Bible and through his creation, and through people’s good works, but as Paul points out in 1 Cor 13:12, these glimpses are just that.
To help us describe the Trinity, or any facet of God, we can use a variety of metaphors and stories. Jesus did this, when describing God’s Kingdom, as did Paul describing sin and the cross. This is where creative, visual and written resources are a great help, and of course The Seed provides just that.
If you put Trinity into the search box, you'll find a wide range of resources that explore this complext doctrine. I'm sure you'll find something that is helpful. If you have any other suggestions in how to explain the Trinity to others, then leave a comment below, we'd love to hear the ideas you use, and I'm sure they will be of help to others.
In the meantime we pray that if you look at the Trinity this Sunday, a little of God will be revealed to your communitites.
May God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, bless you.
