Nursing at Christmas time

I’ve been nursing for 19 years and have worked most of those Christmases. In many ways, it’s just another day: people still get born, die, have strokes or appendicitis, just as they do on any other day of the year. On Christmas Day, however, the nurse’s job isn’t merely to nurse patients but somehow to entertain them and try to replicate something of a homely or family type atmosphere. This can be problematic though, because everyone’s idea of what Christmas should be is so very different and, for those who hate the whole thing, this atmosphere can be thoroughly annoying.

Generally, we try to discharge as many patients as possible before Christmas Day – or at least get them out for the day or for a few hours. However, this isn’t what all patients want...
