I was puzzled when the letter arrived from Paul and astounded when I knew who had brought it.
I wasn’t quite sure what to do first – read the letter, or throw the runaway slave in jail. In the end I decided I’d let myself calm down a bit by reading the letter first and as long as someone was keeping an eye on Onesimus I could always deal with him afterwards.
Paul can certainly flatter people when he needs to and the opening of his letter seemed to be going over the top a little towards me, but I carried on reading, mainly to see where this was leading. Inevitably he began to talk about my slave, or former slave, it appeared. Paul had apparently listened to his story and understood his problems and was now putting him forward as a reformed character because he had become a Christian.
