The service leader begins service dressed in bermuda shorts and T-shirt - he is waiting for the sun to arrive. Along the way he bumps into the nativity characters, and finally meets the son.
Family Carol Service – Waiting for the Sun (Son)
Leader - enters wearing summer clothes (but no hat):
Welcome to our Family Carol Service. It’s great to see you, and you’re probably wondering why you forgot to come in shorts and T-shirt today.... just kidding, you’re probably wondering why I’m dressed like this. Well, I’ve just received some exciting news: the sun is about to arrive! Yes, really. I know we’ve had a terrible year of weather haven’t we?
We wanted some sun over Easter and we had more rain in April than we’ve ever had. We wanted sun for the May Fair and we got more rain. We wanted sun for the Jubilee and we got cloud for a bit... and then more rain. We wanted sun for the Olympics and we actually got some... and then we got more rain for the summer holidays. We wanted sun for Autumn and we got floods. We’ve been waiting for the sun all year.
But it’s never too late is it – and the exciting news is that I have it on good authority that the sun is about to arrive! So I’ve come prepared – and I expect you’re kicking yourselves that you’re not ready too.
Well, never mind, while you think about that, let’s begin our service with our first carol, while I’m off to find my sun hat.
CAROL: COME AND JOIN THE CELEBRATION
Leader - reappears wearing sun hat:
Who knows what this time of year is called? (ASK: Advent)
And one of the things about Advent is that it’s a time of preparation. We get ourselves ready, and one of the ways we need to do that when we come to church is to make sure that we’ve said sorryto God for all the bad stuff in our lives.
In a moment of quiet let us confess to God our fear, our sin, our lack of preparation for Christ’s coming:
