Holy Week 2: Good Friday judges the Church

On Good Friday in Jerusalem, as Jesus died, we are told that the sky went dark, an earthquake struck, and the curtain in the Temple was torn in two from top to bottom. Everything religious that separated God and humanity and kept us apart was now gone for good. God's Kingdom in Jesus shattered the politics of the day and demonstrated the subversive power of love to topple all that would oppress and bind the human spirit. From now on the Jesus movement would truly be a free and transformational force for good, empowered by the breath of the Spirit.
And in the place of God's Kingdom movement we eventually erected the edifice of the Church. And Good Friday stands in judgement upon us just as surely as it did upon Judaism in the minds of Christian converts in the first century.
