Lent – Shrove Tuesday to Easter Day and beyond
Lent…we prepare…
some vague notion of what is to come.
Shrove Tuesday…
an end and a beginning…
we eat pancakes with sugar and syrup.
Ash Wednesday…
we burn our crosses to ash…
we mark the day, ourselves, each other…
but soon…too soon…we forget.
Lent ticks by day by day…forty days will be marked…
will be marked by some and forgotten by many.
Palm Sunday…
donkey and palms, cloaks, banners, shouts, cheers,
hopes, fears…they all clad that road to Jerusalem.
Maundy Thursday…we are humbled…
Christ “did” for others…
but can we “do” for them…for him?
Can we sit with “him” and with the broken bread and poured wine?
Can we sit with our neighbours …with ourselves?
