Another banner headline screams out against politicians, local or national, and we unite against the common enemy, totally critical of the actions taken by those we have elected to power.
Is this always right?
Dear God, how do we get the balance right?
How do we exercise the right to question the decisions our politicians make, yet at the same time have understanding about the complexity of their work and the stresses and demands that are placed upon them?
How do we defend democracy and the right to representation of all views, yet at the same time fight against the injustices that the system can bring?
Wise and loving God, help us to have more awareness and understanding in our response to the authority of government, at all levels of office.
Challenge us to play an active part in the decision making process by voting wisely; by supporting and questioning those in authority; by being prepared to make our voices heard when we believe that unjust decisions have been made and by being prepared to face the challenge of personal involvement if that proves to be the only way of bringing about change.
There are those who tell us that politics are nothing to do with faith, but Jesus criticised the corrupt authorities of his day and demonstrated that all people are equally loved by God and deserve respect and care.
Teach us to look through your eyes and to see the needs of others, daring us to respond in action. Help us to continue the process of challenge and change that will work to make communities and a world built upon the principles that Jesus taught.
For your world's sake.
Amen
