Poem: Stone Circle

Ancient stones circle a hilltop,
their origins for ever mysterious, their purpose undefined.
An aura, not evident to all, drifts in the clear air
creating its own history and energizing traces of the builders
who laboured long to place these slabs of rock into this specific space.

And tourists traipse and trudge the hillside
to wonder or to dismiss the significance of such a sight;
its legacy long forgotten.

Where are they now, those men of courage and tenacity,
working with back-breaking primitive technology
to gather and transport the giant stones
and place them with such significance?
Long gone, and no other record left in explanation.
