Sarah: A Mother’s Lament
Genesis 22: 1-10
He’s taken my son and gone away. Two days ago he took my son. “The Lord has need of him,” he says. He’s taken my son.
I saw what he loaded on that donkey. I know what he’s going to do with that wood, those coals and the knife. I know what he’s going to be asked to do. There was no lamb, you see. Nor a goat. Not even a pigeon. Only the donkey, those two servants, him and my son. “The Lord has need of him.” And, as always, he is going to answer that call.
He’s done that every time. Whenever the call has come, he’s responded. Left this place or that, always moving as directed, for a closer walk in tune with the Lord’s will. It’s easy for him. He hears those instructions so clearly. He always has. But I don’t hear anything. None of us do. We have no idea what’s going on. But this time he’s taken my son and I do know what’s going to happen.
