In February 1991, when Eleanor had red hair and Roy had some,
You left for Fortaleza in Brazil, to adopt a child and raise a family.

From Sheffield to Brazil, Living in God’s will,
to find the family he had planned for you.
When you left Sheffield in the snow, to the heat of Fortaleza, how could you know
Behind the golden beaches, poverty,
Over crowded housing and children sleeping on the floor.
You celebrated your birthday with a meal,
you ordered the cake, it seemed a good deal
Till the cake, at the table it arrived.
It was made of cardboard, you soon realised

Six months of red-tape, it wasn’t going well
with money running out, and Roy had to go back home.
In the depths of your frustration, bureaucracy gone mad
there in your despair Jesus was there.

Miracle number one, they finally gave you a little one,
then turned and said could you take two.
Miracle number two, two couples offering help to you,
Just when you thought all hope had gone
From a couple to a family of four, Paulo and Leo’s new life lay in store
but the judge she just said no, Paulo couldn’t go,
so you had to leave him there, with no way of getting back.
