The Resurrection and the Life
Jesus and his friends went to Judea and Bethany, which was less than two miles from Jerusalem. When they arrived there a few days later there was a large party of mourners, weeping and wailing. Martha ran to meet Jesus, her eyes wild.
Martha: Where were you? You should have been here! We sent word.
Jesus: I did not come straight away.
Martha: I know that! If you had done my brother would still be alive! Instead he’s dead and cold and it’s your fault!
Jesus: I’m sorry I was not here.
Martha: You had the power to do something.
Jesus: Your brother will rise.
Martha: I know that! I know he will rise on the last day. But what about this day – and all the other days we have to live without him.
Jesus: Martha – I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live forever even though their bodies die. Do you believe this?
Martha: Yes, Lord. In spite of what’s happened I still believe that you are the Son of God, the one the prophets said would come into the world.
Jesus: Where’s your sister?
