Were we not all charmed and stirred
by his ev’ry deed and word?
Yet he hangs on Calv’ry’s tree.
Was this ever meant to be?
2 This was surely meant to be:
Christ, unfettered, rises free.
Gone the anguish and the pain.
Earth may catch its breath again.
With the Christ we, too, are free.
This was surely meant to be!
