Today is the anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the United States. For some reason it has reminded me of the first time I visited the United States, during the first Gulf War in 1990. The plane was half empty, which seemed odd, and I was able to stretch out across several seats in order to sleep. I eventually discovered that people from the United States were not flying across the Atlantic because the entire Eastern Hemisphere seemed a dangerous place; it felt safer to stay in the Western Hemisphere. That sense of being safe at home was an assumption shattered by the September 11 attacks.
