Today is the anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the United States. For some reason it has reminded me of the first time I visited the United States, during the first Gulf War in 1990. The plane was half empty, which seemed odd, and I was able to stretch out across several seats in order to sleep. I eventually discovered that people from the United States were not flying across the Atlantic because the entire Eastern Hemisphere seemed a dangerous place; it felt safer to stay in the Western Hemisphere. That sense of being safe at home was an assumption shattered by the September 11 attacks. The United States joined the rest of the world in being aware that there is no such thing as security from attack; all countries are vulnerable...
