With a God such as the LORD, how could his people seek an earthly, visible, fallible king? Their God had led them out of slavery – a king would enslave them again (1st Samuel 8 v 16-17); their God had fought for them – a king would make them fight for him (v 11); their God had provided for them – a king would take from them what they had (v 16-17)...
