Through the city streets they hurried
where each shadow, like a shroud,
hung across the darkened doorways,
sounds of commerce echoed, loud.
This had been the scene of bloodshed,
Hist’ry heard, a nation sighed,
factions fought and people suffered,
mothers wept while children cried.
