Looking through doorway of St Columba's shrine to the replica of St John's Cross made from the original pieces which were taken to Edinburgh, where craftsmen made moulds of the surviving pieces enableing missing parts to be replicated. The copy was erected on the original site outside St Columbas Shrine in 1970, Island of Iona off south coast of Isle of Mull,Scotland, UK. The Martin's cross can be seen in the far distance.
Iona was founded in 563 by St. Columba, and soon became the base for the evangelization of S Scotland, N England and Ireland in the 6th C and a centre for Christian scholarship throughout Europe.
