All of us like to complain about our employers. I met up with someone I had known back in the days when I was a research student in Oxford. Over a cup of tea I asked him how he was getting on at the college where he now worked. He spent the next 20 minutes relating how awful things were while I sipped my tea, wondering when I might get a word in. He was angry. His employers, he declared, were so obsessed with targets and budgets that they didn’t care about the well-being of their employees. ‘They behave like machines! They don’t care for us as people! They’re so impersonal!’...
