I believe in God the Father


As we saw in the last chapter, the creeds help us put into words our trust in ‘the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all consolation’ (2 Corinthians 1.3). One reason why the creeds begin by talking about believing in God as ‘Father’ is because this is the way of speaking about God and speaking to God used by Jesus of Nazareth. The Gospels emphasize how Jesus of Nazareth spoke of God as his ‘Father’. Indeed, the Lord’s Prayer – widely regarded as a ‘model prayer’ for Christians – opens with the phrase ‘Our Father’.
