Description
Christmas - 4 (or 3) shepherds are surprised by an angel (a voice-over). Can include the suggested sound & visual effects, sound is readily available track from The Messiah. Script was written with year 6/7 actors in mind, plus adult voice over.
Music over: from Messiah “And there were shepherds abiding in the fields”
Shepherds enter as recitative continues, and bed down for the night in sleeping bags/blankets.
[SX: Recitative = 1 minunte 15 seconds until ‘Glory to God’]
When the music reaches the loud ‘Glory to God’ chorus, a bright light shines upon the shepherds.
[SX: Ends “Glory to God, glory to God in the highest; and peace on earth”]
One sits up & looks in surprise in the direction of the light.
Music fades and light fades.
Shepherd 1 [Waking nearest shepherd] Here, did you see that? Did you hear that? All that singing! All that light!
Shepherd 2 Leave me alone! You were dreaming.
Shepherd 3 Be quiet! I’m on sheep-watching duty in 2 hours!
[Shepherd 1 settles down again]
Light up again, plus ‘Glory to God’ music. [SX: “Glory to God, glory to God in the highest; and peace on earth” X2]
Music fades and light fades.
[Shepherds 1 & 2 sit up]
Shepherd 2 Whaaat?! That’s amazing!
Shepherd 1 I told you so! Lights and music!
Shepherd 3 [Rubbing his eyes as he also sits up] That will have given David a right shock out there by himself with the sheep. He was expecting a quiet shift on duty.
[Enter Shepherd 4, visibly trembling, weak kneed]
Shepherd 4 [Pointing off-stage in same direction as the light, stuttering] A – A – A – A
Shepherd 1 Steady on David! Here, Reuben, give him a quick swig of something fortifying!
Shepherd 4 An – An – An –An
[Shepherd 2 passes a flask to Shepherd 4, who takes a BIG swig]
Shepherd 4 Ang – Ang – ANGELS!
Shepherds 1, 2, & 3 ANGELS?!
[Light up again, with a little bit of music. Voice-Over begins]
V/O [Booming & echoing] Do not be afraid!
Shepherd 2 Well, in that case – turn down the light and the volume a bit!
V/O [Booming & echoing again] Sorry! [Volume is turned down] As I was saying, Do not be afraid, but get up now
[Shepherds look at each other, uncertain]
V/O I said Get up NOW! [SX Clap of thunder]
[Shepherds scramble to their feet, talking off their hats, wiping noses & trying to look more respectable]
V/O That’s better. And go even unto Bethlehem
Shepherd 2 Huh? What does that mean?
