When my daughter, Hannah, was four years old, she turned to me in the car and said, ‘Daddy, can
we talk about deep things?’ I smiled and inwardly congratulated myself on her intelligence and
how that reflected well on her parents. Here was a child who outwardly appeared to be dominated
by the triviality of Barbies, The Tweenies and a dislike of all meals apart from those shaped like
dinosaurs and made of turkey. Yet, underneath, she wanted to engage with the big questions of
life.
I felt proud. Obviously, with half of my life having been spent as a professional scientist
exploring the origins of the universe and the other half as a preacher of the Christian gospel and
teacher of theology, my influence was being felt by my daughter and, of course, I was the best
person to answer her questions on such issues.
‘What deep things do you want to talk about, Hannah?’ I said. She paused and furrowed her
brow. I waited with expectancy until she said, ‘Swimming pools, they’re deep... and the ocean,
that’s deep ... and my bath, that can be quite deep ....’
