What makes a great leader? Debate within both psychology and business studies has revolved
around whether masculine or feminine characteristics are the most important. Programmes such
as Alan Sugar’s The Apprentice or the American version with Donald Trump pose such questions.
Is the traditionally male tendency to lean towards aggressive competitiveness more effective in
getting the job done than the female skills of networking and empathy?
Football managers are certain kinds of leaders, and few would demonstrate being in touch with
their ‘feminine side’! Indeed, for some of them, the closest they get is in the ‘hairdryer’ treatment
meted out to badly performing players. Other managers are expert at teacup throwing or the
flying boot method of inspiration. The late Brian Clough once encouraged one of his stars after
his international debut by saying, ‘Son, you are the first person to play two games for England on
the same day.’ When the player looked puzzled, Clough went on, ‘Your first and your last.’
Even if such tactics do not work, football managers can always get rid of troublesome or badly
performing players in the summer transfer window, but should leaders stamp their authority in
such a way?
