Not many homes have an actual hearth, a place for fire to burn freely. Most of us live in apartments or houses without fireplaces. Nevertheless, every dwelling has a subjective center for fire. It is the place where we gather, the place we are warmed.
It is no accident that the word heart is central to the word hearth. If we reflect for a moment about the heart of our home, we will have a sense of it straight away—whether it is lit with wood and matches or not, it is still the hearth place...

Our homes are enclosures that breathe.
Dwelling in them we bring our spirit
to the spirit of the place.
Could we daily be aware that
much like wood is brought to a fire...
