Description

Many people who meditate sit facing a wall—facing a limit in order to find the limitless inside. Many pilgrims have traveled to stand beside the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem or to be witnesses by the walls where the names of the dead are inscribed. We need walls to help us with memory and grief, as well as with the daily need for safety and support.

We know a wall will stop us. It rises above us. It shapes enclosures...

The walls of our homes are silent,
yet they speak.

Their height reminds us
to rise above complaint,
to give patience and space
to what confines us...
