Description

When this was originally performed, we made use of a webcam, projector and screen so that the angel Gabriel could appear on screen instead of on stage. We were even able to use ‘WebcamMax’ software to put a halo on Gabriel and also duplicate the angel lots of times for the host of angels. We also pre-recorded Joseph’s dream (scene 2) and had a mock up booking.com website to show what Mary and Joseph were looking at in scene 3. The play could also be performed live without using a screen.
Scene 1 – Mary at home
Stage set up with table and chairs. Table cloth on table.
Narrator: There was once a girl called Mary who was engaged to a man called Joseph.
Mary is on stage, setting the table, including wine glasses, ready for Joseph to come round for dinner.
Angel Gabriel appears (on screen), looking down towards Mary.
Gabriel: Mary! …[no response]… MARY!
Mary looks up, gasps and falls on her knees with her face to the floor then cautiously looks up.
Mary: Who are you?
Gabriel: Don’t worry Mary, I’m only an angel sent to you by God. I’ve got a message for you from God. He’s sending his son to earth – to reclaim David’s throne.
Mary: What. Here? Now?
Gabriel: Yes, right here and right now. In fact, he wants you to be the mother – you’re going to be the mother of God’s son.
Mary: Really? But how? I’m not married yet.
Gabriel: Don’t panic Mary, God’s Spirit will make it happen. God is with you here and now, and he has chosen you.
Mary: Well, if God is with me, then I’ll do whatever he asks. But what about Joseph? What should I tell him?
Gabriel: Don’t worry, I’ll tell him about it too. He’s next on my list. Goodbye. God bless you! [disappears off screen].
Mary: [Talking to the blank screen] but he’s due round here any minute. Perhaps you could just stay and I could introduce you.
The doorbell rings and Mary goes to answer it and let Joseph in.
