"So passes a lifetime" says the Latin motto on this sundial in Middleham. As their own lives have passed by inexorably under its temporal reminder of our mortality, generations have looked upon this and pondered its truth for themselves. So as one year ends and another begins it is fitting that we should pause to take stock of how the passage of time has shaped our life and of how our newly minted "resolutions" reflect the ways in which we might like things to be different in the future - and not just our waistlines.  The motto, however, is anything other than frivolous; it poses an implicit and profoundly important question about how we choose to value and individually express the precious gift of being alive.
