Imagining the Lectionary: Point of Isolation (Lent 4A)
Reflection accompanying image “caution – point of isolation”
They said, "You're nothing but dirt! How dare you take that tone with us!" Then they threw him out in the street. (John 9:34)
The story in John chapter 9 about the healing of the blind beggar man is an object lesson in finger-pointing isolation. All through the narrative one senses fingers jabbing accusingly in the direction of the man and his parents. Isolated in his sightless plight on the streets, locked down into unremitting poverty, the man has grown up at the mercy of others. He won't have seen the fingers pointing him out, but time and again he will have heard voices questioning his unfortunate condition and wondering just how he is responsible for a misery which must be of his own making. It is this cruel double isolation of visual disability and social stigma which Jesus now addresses.
