Imagining the Lectionary: The Mighty One has done great things for me (Advent 4C)

Reflection accompanying image “The mighty one has done great things for me

And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favour on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name." (Luke 1:46-50)

Twilght in Roundhay Park, Leeds, and a woman walks across the horizon, treading the line between the dark solidity of earth and the infinity of sky and cosmos beyond. Seen like this, set against the vastness of the universe and the unfathomable depths of eternity, she is so singular and small. One tiny speck of consciousness in the millennia of human history, a unique person and a self-aware life, she walks along the unfolding pathway of the present moment. Just like Mary did. And we believe that God loves her just as much.
