Mark 14.1—15.47

It is as though there are any number of parallel stories in Mark’s account of the trial and death of Jesus. The characters in each story are largely unaware of the others, though they may interact with each other to some extent. But each story believes it is the main story, carrying the meaning and purpose of the whole thing. The characters in each story seem to live in parallel time zones in which their decisions and actions make and remake history. They are the ones whose heroic lives and selfless decisions will be taught to generations of people to come as the history of the period, the only possible narrative. But the impact of Jesus’s death is about to fuse all of these characters and these stories into something much bigger...
