1 Kings 9:1-28


In connection with 1 Kings 7 I mentioned the work Joe is doing on my bathroom. Yesterday he finished the work. The fixtures look as if they were designed in the twenty-first century rather than somewhat before; the rusty cupboards are gone; the door shuts properly; the sink drains properly; the fan works silently instead of clattering; and my bathtub is all shining white instead of stained. I just need to go and buy a new shower rail and bath mat. I can stand and look at it and almost feel a bit like God in Genesis 1 and say, “That’s good.” Joe does the same, having more right to feel a little like God. For me as the person who will use the bathroom every day, however, the enjoyment will soon fade. It’s like buying a new outfit. After a short while, you need another fix of newness. You don’t fulfill your desires in such a way as not to need to fulfill more desires...
