Horses and Chariots of Fire around Elisha
2 Kings 6:8-23

Over recent years the way I pray has been revolutionized by the awareness from the Prophets that when we pray we are taking part in debates in God’s cabinet in heaven. Stories like the one about Micaiah in 1 Kings 22 illustrate how God doesn’t just sit alone in heaven deciding things, any more than God takes all the necessary actions in the world without using other agents. God chairs a cabinet and makes decisions in light of its debates. Prophets don’t just listen; they take part, and that is what we do in prayer. That’s why prayer is important; as in any meeting, if some people don’t take part, then that influences the course of the debate and the decisions that are made. Even just naming people in prayer, as I do quite a bit, reminds the decision-making body not to forget them. Heaven is a much more complicated place than we often think, and what happens on earth relates to what happens in heaven..
