Yesterday was Mother’s Day, and I was reading a newspaper story about two mothers with one baby. Its birth mother had got pregnant while she was a single student, and she had decided she didn’t want to keep the baby but that she would not have an abortion. While she and the child’s father had eventually split up, they had already decided to have the baby adopted by a couple who could not have children of their own. When her son was born, all her instincts were to keep it. She could not imagine how a mother could give up a child and live, but she did so. Yet this is an “open adoption”; the two mothers stay in touch, and from time to time she sees the child she bore. Sometimes she holds him, and her whole body shudders...
