I’ve just been reading a paper by one of my students titled “Prayer in the Scriptures.” The student astonished me first by reporting a poll indicating that 72 percent of people in the United States pray at least several times a week. Then he surprised me by reporting another study indicating that people in the church who pray are apparently more likely to pray for other people than for themselves. At least, of the prayers left in a prayer box, only 5 percent were for the author alone; 81 percent were for family and friends, and 11 percent for global issues.
