Today I read about the death of the young son of the leader of the opposition party in the U.K. parliament. The boy had been born with cerebral palsy and a severe form of epilepsy, and in a sense his parents had been watching him die all through his six years. They sometimes slept on hospital floors to be with him in a crisis. For them, he was the most beautiful and the most precious child in the world. But they had to watch him die. His father’s chief political adversary, the prime minister, who had himself once lost a child, commented that “the death of a child is an unbearable sorrow that no parent should ever have to endure.”...
