I Hate the People Who Hate You
Job 27: 1-23

When I have taken part in “quiet days” for reflection and prayer, three favorite Old Testament texts have been the one about the still, small voice that I mentioned in connection with Job 25–26, the “Be still and know that I am God” of Psalm 46, and the reminder in Psalm 139 that wherever we go, God is there. But on other occasions I have been with people who have appreciated Psalm 139 and then discovered that it later talks about hating the people who hate God, and they are disturbed. How can someone who is so spiritually sensitive in the earlier part of the psalm talk about hating in the later part of the psalm?...
