On Sunday we had a meeting to discuss our church’s ministry to homeless people; many live in our area, and we are next door to a community center. They know that Sunday morning is an obvious time to drop by to see if we have food, and we try to keep food supplies on hand to give to them. One topic of our conversation, however, was that their instinct is to look for the rector and the instinct of members of the congregation is to refer them to the rector, which is a problem not least because he needs to be getting ready for the services. Yet there is something right about that instinct. There is a sense in which the rector is the head of a household, of the church congregation, and one of the commitments of the head of a household is to see that the household’s resources are made available to people in need...
