We’ve Probably All Been Rescued from Death a Few Times
Psalm 18: 1-24


Between us my wife and I have had four or five illnesses that would have left us dead had we lived in most contexts in human history. We have both had appendicitis that might have killed us without medical intervention. My wife’s appendicitis then turned into something more unpleasant, which might also have killed her. When she was giving birth to her daughter, she almost died. This year I have had an illness that would have been life-threatening in the past. One of my sons had appendicitis and peritonitis when he was a teenager; the other recently developed diabetes. In the West, we take for granted that medicine can cope with all these illnesses or events, which in most contexts would most likely have led to death, but we don’t think much about it...
