I was just checking the U.S. State Department’s current travel warnings, a list of places where “long-term, protracted conditions that make a country dangerous or unstable lead the State Department to recommend that Americans avoid or consider the risk of travel to that country.” The countries are listed according to the date when they were placed on the list, but all are within the last few months. Near the top is Chad, where my stepdaughter and her husband will be going in a few weeks on one of their recurrent trips in connection with working on behalf of Darfuri refugees. Farther down is Israel, where my wife and I are planning to go next year, and after that is the Philippines, where we are going in a few weeks. Even farther down is Mexico, where we were just now contemplating a few days’ vacation...
