These are frightening words from Jesus in today’s
Gospel reading. He imagines a group of people
who truly believe they are his followers and yet
are mistaken. These people perform mighty acts
in the name of Jesus, but Jesus has no idea who
they are. The people he knows and recognizes
are the ones who act on what they have heard
from Jesus and, since this comes at the end of
the Sermon on the Mount, presumably Jesus is
implying that they must act on what he has just
