Magnificat or Revolution - Luke: 1:46b–55

These are words of revolution and of judgment. But we miss that in our tuneful singing in this run-up to Christmas. Look at them with me.
‘he’, that is God, ‘has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts’.
Those folk who are just too sure of themselves, who speak with weasily words, laying down the law for others with neither thought nor compassion. The words are like those of an old testament prophet warning people of power that when they make poor people poorer, make it more difficult to feed their children or be housed and clothed they can consider themselves judged. And the words should be heard on our streets and across the world.
