Among the many honours that David Beckham has collected, there is one for which he just had to
stand still. Beckham is the first man to have appeared on the cover of the magazine Marie Claire.
I found myself wondering what it is that makes Beckham so attractive to Marie Claire’s
publishers and readers. Of course, in terms of looks, he has a lot more to offer than Peter
Beardsley or even myself, as my wife was quick to point out. It seems to me, though, that his
attractiveness is about more than that.
Beckham is attractive because he is both fit and committed. This football star is not only a sex-
god (my wife’s words), but also a committed husband and father. While the rumours of his
playing away with Rebecca Loos were tabloid fodder for a time, he is still with Posh. Some may
mock him, but, while everyone around him have often lost their heads, he has kept his. He
inhabits a world of image and adulation, but shows the rarely seen quality of commitment, even
after making mistakes.
This is the stuff of fairytale romance. In a post-Bridget Jones world, sexual attraction is good, but
it is not enough.
