Jesus Walks on Water...
...I listened last night to an organ recital, given by one of the world’s leading organists on a truly great instrument. Bach, Reger, Bruckner – wonderful composers, wonderful music, a magical evening. But there was one piece I had never heard before. By a modern composer, it built up a wall of sound, with chords and trills and little bits of melody all woven together, coming at the ear in wave after wave of exciting and dramatic music. Every time you thought, ‘There – that’s where we were going,’ there was more. It was quite overwhelming.
Then, just as you thought you might not be able to take it much longer, from within the wall of sound something different began to emerge. A slow chorale melody appeared quietly, like a cat that had been sleeping unnoticed in a corner of the room but that now uncoiled itself, stood up, stretched elegantly, and started to walk about. The melody grew and swelled, blending with the previous sound but steadily taking command. Eventually the whole piece came together in a blaze of tune and sound, leaving us drained but happy...
