Hands up those who took one look at this week’s Old Testament lesson and gave it a wide berth. All right; now hands up those who seized upon it as a chance to preach on How Not To Commit Immorality. Full marks to the lectionary for including one of the Bible’s shockers – though not for losing its nerve and stopping, like Britten’s Rape of Lucretia, just before the deed itself.

The point, of course, is neither to draw a veil over such incidents, nor to wallow in wickedness, but to reflect with sober sorrow on the larger story that here turns a fateful corner...
