Forgiveness is always shocking, even when it’s God who’s doing it. Indeed, that’s often the worst: in a paradox whose only solution is the depth of human pride, we shrink from the undeserved, and hence humbling, grace and love of God. We remain paralysed, locked within the cycles of our own folly.

Watch how it works. ‘Look at my new creation!’ says God, ‘Look at the oases appearing in the desert!’ ‘How boring’, say God’s people, not even troubling to pray, let alone offer sacrifice; ‘how pointless it all is'...
