Three very different prayers.
Whatever we think of the ending of the book of Job (some scholars, inevitably, suppose it a later addition; some in our gloomy culture think it spoils the story to have Job so splendidly restored), the turning-point in his story should not be missed. He repents of his own presuming to question God – though God himself declares that he has in fact spoken the truth, that is, that he has maintained God’s justice against superficial caricatures – and he prays for his friends, guilty of those same untrue caricatures. The prayer, for the people who had been torturing him with their spurious ‘comfort’, is itself an act born of the humility that accepts God’s justice even when it doesn’t understand it.
